His face flushed. “Is this some kind of joke? You dragged me here to break up with me in front of clowns and cotton candy?”
“You gave me an ultimatum,” I said. “Choose you or the boys. I chose the boys the moment you opened your mouth.”
Teenagers nearby had stopped scrolling. Someone started recording.
“She Cooked Him”
“You’re going to regret this,” Elliot spat. “Nobody else is going to want you with two kids attached.”
“Then it’s a good thing I want myself,” I said. “And I want them. That’s more than enough.”
“Ohhh — she cooked him,” one of the teenagers said.
Elliot exploded, voice booming across the fairground. “You’re seriously throwing away our engagement for someone else’s kids? Are you insane?”
Heads turned. The twins clung to my legs.
“They’re my brothers,” I said. “Not ‘someone else’s kids.’”
“You Dodged a Bullet”
“All I asked was that you put them in foster care! That’s normal!”
A woman gasped. “Did he just say foster care? About those little boys?”
An older man stepped forward. “Son, you should be ashamed of yourself. Screaming at a woman about her orphaned brothers in public? Walk away before you embarrass yourself further.”
“Honey, you dodged a bullet,” another voice called out. “Good for you!”
Elliot looked around for one sympathetic face in the crowd and found none. He shoved through the strangers and stormed off.
The First Real Photo
I knelt between my brothers. “You still want that picture, sweetheart?” the photographer asked gently.
“More than anything.”
The camera flashed, capturing the first real photo of our new family. My heart was quieter than it had been in weeks.
By that evening, the video had spread through our whole town. Elliot’s coworkers, friends, and family all saw exactly what he’d demanded of two newly orphaned little boys. He called over and over, texted apology after apology.
I never replied.
He wanted me to choose between him and my brothers — instead, in front of a crowd of total strangers, he taught everyone exactly who he really was.
